"Here I Am South African"
At the most recent run of our Community Engagement Through the Arts (CETA) training, several fantastic works of art emerged. On the final night at the artist showcase, audience members were treated to visual art, spoken word, dance, music, and more. One of the participants, a native of South Africa, wrote a poignant spoken word piece.
Equipping Artists in Belgium
In May, a team of four from Inspiro facilitated another Community Engagements Through the Arts course in Belgium. Many of the participants were from the OM ship, Logos Hope. Participants came from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including Chinese, Filipina, Indian, French/Gabonese, French/Roma (gypsy), Mozambican, Kenyan, South Korean, German, and British. One of our favourite things to do is make sure we represent everyone in worship, and we ended up singing in eleven languages! We enjoyed learning about these different cultures as we explored how to dig into them to find art forms that would resonate deeply with the communities we want to reach.

Joy: A Testimony and a Song
The theme of the third week of Advent is joy - the joy that only the incarnation of the Lord of all creation can bring. As artists, we sometimes experience this joy through the creation of our art. The following story was written by a graduate from our most recent Community Engagement Through the Arts (CETA) course, Thomas Cornelius. Through the CETA course, Thomas discovered the joy of writing poetry and music. Read his story and listen to his song below!

South Africa REACH Training
More about the Article Image: Photography by Julien Nell, Artwork by Madison Booth - During the Arts elective at OM's REACH training, trainees interviewed a person of Cape Mixed Race. They learned that individuals in that people group liked to express their love by touching each other's hair. They frequently feel like their hair is not beautiful because it is a mix of hair types. And they feel they are not beautiful. This image shows white hands touching a mixed-race person's hair as a sign of worth and love. What joy was expressed on the faces of the women interviewed as they saw this painting for the first time!
Inspiro was thrilled to be part of OM in South Africa's REACH program last month by offering an Arts elective called Community Engagement Through the Arts (CETA). Read more from Course Coordinator Heidi Salzwedel below!
