“It was the first time I realized that painting could capture the Word of God, speak into people’s lives and give me the opportunity to share my faith.”

Janice T. (Alliance & Short-term team member)

Every day all around the globe, artists on mission are creating, cultivating, and contributing in their communities. As they seek to see their art used in the work the Lord is doing, we want to share their stories to encourage and inspire.
This blog is a place to read those stories, giving you a glimpse into how the Lord is using the arts around the world.

We recently talked with a new friend, Juhani Ahola, a musician from Finland. We are so excited to share Juhani's heart and music with you! Read more below about how and why he writes.

  1. When did you start playing and writing music?

As a teenager we had a band and already then, I and my friend wrote songs. Since I became a believer, I started to create my own songs. It has only been in recent years that I have made some of my songs into singles. I did not have much experience recording songs, but Matthew Swanton[1] kindly made it possible. We have had the joy of making some of my songs into singles for a wider audience.

  1. Do you play any instruments?

I play acoustic guitar.

  1. How have you seen the Lord use your music?

It is difficult to say, but my songs are based on Scriptures, and I try to focus on Christ and our new reality and future in Him. We are created to be God-worshipers – giving all the glory to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We are His image bearers, and as we worship Him with all that we have, we reflect the kingdom of God in this broken world. I believe that as we proclaim God’s reality and truth with our Scriptural worship songs, people can have some foretaste of Heaven. This is not in its fullness but will possibly prepare them to sense and receive God’s call to believe the Gospel of Christ.

  1. What is your favorite thing about writing music?

It’s just so invigorating to play and sing worship songs. My ideas for new songs usually come when I just play for fun and sing some melodies. It’s great to experience how the song actually evolves and eventually takes the form that sounds pleasant and is keeping with the lyrics’ genre and the message. The lyrics often require some ‘maturing time’ until the song ‘tastes good.’

The Creator God has made us in His image, and it is no wonder we also have some inner desire to produce something new and beautiful. The Gospel of Christ is so beautiful that I believe we are called to express this message in many different forms – music and singing is a very common way for people to express their emotions and beliefs.

  1. How do you hope the Lord continues to use your music?

I hope that people can be encouraged by it and desire more of God, like the Psalmist (in Psalm 136) puts the eternal truth that is reflected throughout the Bible:

‘Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.’
