“It was the first time I realized that painting could capture the Word of God, speak into people’s lives and give me the opportunity to share my faith.”

Janice T. (Alliance & Short-term team member)

Every day all around the globe, artists on mission are creating, cultivating, and contributing in their communities. As they seek to see their art used in the work the Lord is doing, we want to share their stories to encourage and inspire.
This blog is a place to read those stories, giving you a glimpse into how the Lord is using the arts around the world.

The third week of Advent focuses on the theme of Joy!

The angel tells the shepherds in Luke 2:10, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (ESV). This joy was directly tied to the fact that God had incarnated Himself and come to dwell with His people. The angel goes on in the next verse to say, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Why was there good news of great joy? Because Christ had come! For the believer, this joy cannot be shaken, for Christ has ever and always come and is coming again.

Alliance member Silvina Erwin painted this beautiful piece called “Joy” (acrylics on canvas). Silvina says, “I painted this as a statement. No matter what challenges we face or the curveballs life throws our way, joy is our inheritance. Sometimes it is the kind of joy that bursts out so intensely that it feels like our own skin can't contain it. Other times, it's the calm, peaceful bliss of being enveloped by a sense of serenity, surrounded by His presence, and embrace.” She drew inspiration from the memory of a friend’s daughter, named Joy, leaving a message on her phone singing “I’ve got the Joy, Joy, Joy.” Silvina shares that this moment lifted her from a place of challenging sadness. She was also inspired by one of her eldest daughter’s expressions – one that she makes when all seems right with the world.

Silvina added, “Joy is not just a fleeting emotion; as followers of Jesus, it's a part of our legacy and our birthright. What a joyful thought!” As we celebrate this final week of Advent before Christmas week, may we remember the unshakable joy that is ours in Christ.
